The saying, “One often meets their destiny on the road they take to avoid it,” aptly describes my journey toward earning a master’s in chemical engineering at the University of Waterloo. Receiving the acceptance letter was a milestone, but arriving late in Fall 2022 due to visa issues impacted my first term. Despite the initial struggle, exploring campus life was an exhilarating experience.
Initially, I pursued a course-based MEng, avoiding research, which I believed would involve heavy reading, theoretical work, and writing papers. However, by the second term, my enthusiasm waned because I did similar things in my undergrad, taking up course and clearing them to obtain degree. While enjoying a course from the Business and Entrepreneurship department, I felt MEng lacked the excitement I sought. Then, a turning point came when I received a departmental email about a Master of Applied Science (MASc) position under Associate Professor David Simakov, focusing on green energy production. Though initially hesitant, I accepted the challenge after a successful interview and presentation.
Professor Simakov surprised me by offering a mix of theoretical and practical research options. I eagerly chose practical applications, conducting experiments in green energy production, syn gas, and material characterization. The hands-on experience changed my perspective, and I never looked back. I formed meaningful friendships with international peers, participated in a collaborative MITACS project with IIT Delhi, and attended a “Catalysts” conference in Quebec City, meeting esteemed researchers and collaborators. This transition made me feel impactful in having contributed to something while earning degree.
The program switch also opened unexpected doors. While researching hydrogen production, I connected with a company at a job fair, securing an internship and later a job. This bold move not only enriched my academic and social life but also set me on a promising career path. I’m deeply grateful for everyone who supported me through this transformative journey.
